"Break
the Bank"
Within the last half-decade you've probably seen BREAK THE BANK
all around the dials:
1948-1949 on ABC
1949-1952 on NBC
1952-1953 on CBS
1953 on NBC
1954-1956 on ABC
1956-1957 on NBC
1976 on ABC
1976-1977 and 1985-1986 in Syndication
BREAK THE BANK was a blockbuster on radio and made the transition
to TV with ease. Always a big money show, contestants would
work their way through a series of progressively more difficult
questions until they got a chance to Break the Bank & win
several thousand dollars depending on how long it had been since
someone else had broken the bank. Viewers wrote postcards
which were placed in the wish bowl. They hoped to become
the wish bowl couple and receive an all expense trip to New York
to compete on the show. When the show went to really big
money in 1956, the studio audience contestants were replaced by
experts who competed for a top prize of $250,000. (Which as far
as we know, no one actually got that far!)
Former Hosts of the BREAK THE BANK TV Show were:
Bert Parks
Tom Kennedy
Jack Barry
Gene Rayburn
Joe Faraco
